Who we are
PennEnvironment is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. We believe there’s something special about Pennsylvania — something worth protecting and preserving for future generations. Whether it’s a beloved river or stream like the Susquehanna or the Wissahickon, our rolling family farmland, or one of our 120 state parks, Pennsylvania’s natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways. Yet the places we love and the environmental values so many of us share are too often threatened by powerful industries, short-sighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy and spirited grassroots action.
That’s the idea behind PennEnvironment. Together with tens of thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

What we do
Funded by supporters like you, we research the challenges confronting Pennsylvania’s environment and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our research reports, news conferences, interviews with reporters, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and more, we raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sensible solutions. Our canvassers meet people where they are — in public places or door to door — building awareness, recruiting new supporters and activists, and raising funds to support our work.
When decisions are being made about Pennsylvania’s environment, our elected officials hear plenty from the gas companies, developers and other powerful interests. We make the case for our environment and help people like you make your voice heard, through petitions, emails, letters, phone calls and more, all delivered to the right people just when it matters most.

Putting your support to work
- Protecting our rivers and streams. Through our state’s conservation programs, we’ve helped clean and protect hundreds of miles of rivers and streams, from the Brandywine to the Susquehanna. But now the Keystone Fund, a crucial program for cleaning our waterways, preventing pollution and preserving our riverbanks, is at risk. We need our leaders to maintain the Keystone Fund.
- Taking illegal polluters to court — and winning. In 2011, PennEnvironment won the largest penalty against an illegal water polluter in state history.
- Protecting our waters from Marcellus Shale drilling. The Monongahela, Neshaminy Creek and all our waters will be better protected, thanks to new standards that limit how much toxic drilling wastewater gas companies can dump in our rivers and streams.
