Report: PA could spend $1 trillion on fossil fuels

By David Dagan

Pennsylvania could spend as much as $1 trillion on fossil fuels between 2010 and 2030, according to a new report from the advocacy group PennEnvironment.

Nationwide, spending on fossil fuels in the same period could range from $23 trillion to $30 trillion, PennEnvironment said. The figures do not include the cost of environmental impacts. The projections are based on data from the Energy Information Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Energy.

PennEnvironment said moving toward renewable fuels was a better alternative. The report acknowledges that is also expensive, but said, "Many clean energy investments make sense in strictly economic terms. And many others make good sense when the environment and public health are brought into the picture."
