New energy bill merits support

It is disappointing that U.S. Rep. Phil English, of Erie, R-3rd Dist., voted against the Energy Independence and Security Act.

By increasing fuel-economy standards for the first time in decades and setting a national renewable electricity standard, the bill would take a historic step toward a new energy future. By putting more fuel-efficient cars on the road and increasing our use of renewable energy, the bill would create more than 40,000 jobs in Pennsylvania, save Pennsylvania consumers $1 billion at the gas pumps and $1 billion on their energy bills, and make a down payment on the fight against global warming.

More than ever, America needs a new direction on energy policy, but English has failed to change course. When the bill reaches the U.S. Senate, Penn-Environment urges Sens. Bob Casey and Arlen Specter to support the bill.
