Tell PA Senators to Support Clean Energy


A comprehensive climate and energy bill will not only help to address the harmful effects of a warming climate on our farms and ranches, but it will also provide us with new economic opportunities and a chance to contribute to America’s energy independence.

I urge you to pass legislation to address global warming and expand America’s clean energy alternatives this session. A comprehensive climate and energy bill will not only help to address the harmful effects of a warming climate on our farms and ranches, but it will also provide us with new economic opportunities and a chance to contribute to America’s energy independence including:

• Carbon sequestration projects on agricultural lands are the easiest, most readily available and cost-effective means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions on a meaningful scale. Studies indicate that agricultural lands could offset up to one fifth of current US greenhouse gas emissions.

• Ambitious renewable energy goals offer farmers and ranchers a way of earning new income by using their land for renewable energy projects or growing biomass for the next generation of biofuels or bioenergy, reducing our dependence on foreign sources of energy.

• Increasing energy efficiency measures would reduce our electricity bills. Energy expenditures represent 6 percent of total national farm production costs, costing farmers over $10 billion annually. Lowering these costs helps more farmers and ranchers stay on their land as well as lowering consumption of fossil fuels.

• Studies by many entities, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a recently released study by 25x’25 coalition shows that under a properly designed cap-and-trade program virtually all major crops will see a positive net return.

Please help lead the effort to pass climate and energy legislation now. We need to address this critical issue for the future of our children and the lands we will leave them to work.
