Beyond Preposterous: Tell the EPA to stop BP from dumping in the Great Lakes

BP talks a lot about being 'Beyond Petroleum,' but their plan for increasing dumping ammonia and toxic sludge into Lake Michigan from their oil refinery in Whiting, Indiana shows they're certainly not beyond polluting our Great Lakes.

The EPA needs to hear from you today. Please join our campaign by signing our petition to EPA Region 5 Administrator Mary Gade urging her to stop the permits BP has received to increase their pollution into our Great Lakes.

***PETITION TEXT***

Countering years of work to clean up the Great Lakes, Indiana’s Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) permitted BP to greatly expand toxic dumping from its Whiting, Indiana oil refinery. The permit allows BP to dump 1,500 pounds of ammonia and nearly 5,000 pounds of industrial sludge, laced with mercury and other heavy metals, daily into Lake Michigan.

Lake Michigan and the rest of Great Lakes are national treasures. They provide millions of Americans with not only the basics of life such as drinking water, but a place for recreation – fishing, swimming and boating. All of this is put at risk if companies like BP are allowed increase their dumping into our Great Lakes.

It’s been years since any company was allowed to increase dumping in Lake Michigan. We, the undersigned, call on EPA Region 5 Administrator Mary Gade to stop the IDEM's permits for BP's increased dumping.
