Supreme Court Rebukes Bush Administration Inaction on Global Warming
PHILADELPHIA—In a landmark decision in perhaps the most important environmental case ever heard by the Supreme Court, the Court ruled today that the Clean Air Act gives the U.S. EPA the authority to regulate carbon dioxide and other global warming pollutants from cars. Read the release.
How You Can Help
Ask your state legislators to make cutting global warming pollution a top priority in the 2007-08 legislative session in Harrisburg.
Brief Summary
Global warming is the most pressing environmental problem we face today, and its potential impacts on Pennsylvania and the entire globe are numerous. In Pennsylvania specifically, global warming could mean more heat-related deaths in urban areas like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, more severe weather and flooding, more unhealthy air days, and more threatened species—everything from songbirds to rainbow trout—due to changing habitats.
We know that burning fossil fuels—oil, coal and gas—is what is fueling global warming, and we also know that Pennsylvania is a big part of the problem. Pennsylvania emits over 250 million tons of global warming pollution each year—the 3rd highest level of global warming pollution in the country. We have a moral obligation and responsibility to act now to correct this problem, and protect future generations from the worst consequences of global warming.
Thankfully, by sharply reducing global warming pollution in Pennsylvania and across the country, we can make this happen. And we have the policies and technologies to accomplish these pollution reductions. Specifically, PennEnvironment is working at the state and national level to implement several policy solutions:
